The impact of the Subsea Broadband Cable

Connected directly to the Maroochydore CBD is an 18 Tbps submarine data cable providing the fastest east coast connection from Australia to Asia. The Sunshine Coast is the only regional city in the world to have its own cable connection and prior to this, Sydney and Perth were the only connection points in Australia.

This network connection is a major draw card for data hungry businesses and leading investment and commerce businesses from across the globe who rely on superior telecommunications infrastructure. Our region can now provide faster data speeds, reduced risk and lower costs than other city centres, plus the incredible lifestyle tops it all off.

A number of big businesses, tech start-ups and challenger brands have already decided to call the Sunshine Coast home, thanks to the subsea broadband cable and the opportunities it enables. The cable's abilities have also meant that the Sunshine Coast is now at the forefront of the globally competitive Australian cyber security sector with the establishment of a cyber security node and with new CBD tenants -  the non-profit organisation Critical Infrastructure – Information Sharing and Analysis Centre (CI-ISAC).

Like Colorado is for Silicon Valley in the USA, so is the Sunshine Coast for not only Australian tech and industry leaders but for global businesses to recruit and base people and assets with incredible access to data and a world-class lifestyle. This region is likely to become home to industries that don’t exist yet, while also supporting the need nationally to provide a location for latency, redundancy and an alternative location to source and house people for every major tech reliant business in Australia.

While the full benefits of the cable are still to be unleashed, what we expect the cable will do for our region is more than fast internet, it’s the beginning of a phenomenon that’s going to impact every single industry and has the potential to change and improve work, leisure, entertainment, education, research and health .. with the Sunshine Coast driving it all.
